Walthamstow market was and still is about a mile and a quarter long. From one end to the other on both sides it was lined
with stalls selling everything that you or your mum were ever likely to need. And behind the stalls were the shops.
A lot of my friends parents ran their own stalls selling vegetables, salad, fruit, clothing and materials of all
colors.
Some are still going today although the faces have changed the culture is the same. As kids we collected jam jars and news
papers which we sold to the traders for recycling, this and other harmless scams greatly improved our pocket money.
We used to help set up the stalls on market day and clear them away in the evening when the traders would retire
to
'The Cocked Tavern' or ' The Chequers' to count out the days takings over hot pies and pints.
The market traders kids
could be seen waiting for Dad or Mum to bring them out lemonade and crisps or hot pies while they waited to go home.
We never heard of any one being mugged or molested because everyone looked after each other and we all knew everyone
and where they lived so you never got lost cold or hungry when your mates were around. Christmas was a special time
when the
stalls were decorated and alive with activity, the smell of food and cooking, the pie and eel shop, the butchers selling
the turkeys.
Parents hunting for last minute presents. My Dad always got the bird a few days early. But he would come in weighed
down with fruit
and sweets he had just got as the traders auctioned off the produce rather than have it left over to go to waste.
That was the time to get things cheap. We had no fridges or freezers so everything was bought fresh each day. Looking back
on my memories of those times, they were very happy and I shall always remember my
childhood with great affection.
It is with this in mind that I decided to make an addition to my website listing as much information as I can find along the way about
the Local Street Markets of the British Isles. I can only scratch the surface here so if I miss your market please
write
and give me all the details and I will add it to the list so that other people can find our traditional markets when they are on
holiday or visiting. So come on folks let me have your details.
